Hey there Careblazers! Welcome back to Careblazers TV, the place where we talk about everything dementia. If you are caring for a loved one with any type of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body Dementia, or vascular dementia, then this is the place for you!
Today’s video talks about 5 surprising facts about dementia (Plus a bonus fact). Dementia can be a confusing word with a lot of confusing symptoms. Today’s video clears up some of the common misperceptions or questions I hear a lot. Here they are:
Surprising Fact about dementia #1- There are MANY different types of dementia AND you can have more than one kind of dementia.
Surprising Fact about dementia #2- People with dementia can have both good and bad days. Sometimes when people with dementia have a really good day, this starts to get family members questioning the diagnosis or even makes the family member wonder if their loved one is doing difficult behaviors on purpose. It is absolutely common for people with dementia to have good moments, and sometimes good days. Instead of questioning those moments, enjoy and cherish those those moments.
Surprising Fact about dementia #3- There are currently no treatments for dementia that cures or slows down the disease. Despite all the TV commercials you see on TV, the brain disease continues to get worse regardless of any medication. What the medication does do for some people is cover up some of the symptoms and for many families, this is a worthwhile treatment to pursue. Talk to your loved one’s medical provider to discuss if any medication is right for your loved one.
Surprising Fact about dementia #4- Dementia continues to get worse and is fatal. The various dementias eventually take away a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and hold up their own head.
Surprising Fact about dementia #5- Dementia affects a person vision to the point that they may be scared to take a step or walk because they cannot tell where one stair ends and another begins. Or they cannot tell if the dark pattern on the floor is a hole. The eyes go through many changes in dementia and there are things you can do in your environment to make it more dementia friendly so your loved one is not so scared to walk and is less likely to fall.
Surprising Fact about dementia #6- People who care for loved one’s with dementia are AMAZING!!!! According to the 2017 Alzheimer’s Facts and Figures report, there were over 15 million unpaid Americans caring for someone with dementia in 2016. Those caregivers did over 18.2 Billion hours of care valued at over $230 BILLION! Just in case you forget, you really are amazing. Not only does your loved one with dementia need you, this world needs you.
I hope this video is interesting. Did any of these facts surprise you? Let me know by leaving a comment below. I really want to make Careblazers as helpful as possible so let me know what you want to learn about or what your biggest struggles are and I will do my best to find a way to bring you information to help.
- Dr. Natali
In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. In my job, I help people with dementia, and their caregivers, by visiting them in their own homes and helping them cope through the many struggles of caring for someone with dementia. I have always wanted to help more people than is possible for me in a work day. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.
